Dara M. Tang's practice focuses primarily on civil litigation, with an emphasis on business litigation. Specifically, she litigates a variety of business matters, including corporate fraud, commercial transactions, breaches of contract, etc. Ms. Tang's practice also encompasses transactional law, including the formation of corporations and limited liability companies, drafting and reviewing non-disclosure agreements, licensing agreements, triple net leases, etc. Additionally, Ms. Tang advises the firm's corporate clients on issues related to employment law and other labor issues. Ms. Tang received training at the Center for Conflict Resolution at Loyola Marymount Law School, and is therefore familiar with the benefits of alternative dispute resolution. To maximize the benefits and goals of litigation, she will explore and advise clients as to the best uses of alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration.
Educational Experience:
Ms. Tang obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and English from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2000, where she was on the Dean's Honor List. She then attended Loyola Marymount Law School and obtained her Juris Doctorate in 2003. In law school, she was a staff writer for the Entertainment Law Review, and later the Chief Technical Writer for the law review. She also served as the research assistant for Professor Allan Ides, and assisted in the publication of the textbook Civil Procedure: Cases and Problems (with Christopher N. May) (Aspen 2d Ed. 2003), widely used in law school classes on civil procedure. Ms. Tang interned at the United States Attorney's Office as well as with the United States District Court, Central District, in the Courtroom of the Honorable Robert M. Takasugi, where she participated in a high profile trial as part of the court's staff.
Professional Experience:
Having worked at AV-rated law firms, Ms. Tang has extensive civil litigation experience on both the Plaintiff and Defense side. She has experience in all aspects of managing and preparing cases for trial, including client consultations, formulating case strategy, discovery, including written discovery and depositions, law and motion work, and trial work. She successfully first-chaired a jury trial in a premise liability case involving a major drugstore chain, wherein the Plaintiff, while a minor, fell headfirst from an allegedly defective shopping cart and sustained severe and permanent brain damage. Ms. Tang's client, the Cross-Defendant in the case, prevailed at trial and recovered all of her requested costs. Ms. Tang also successfully second-chaired a personal injury jury trial, representing the Plaintiff, who has sustained severe injuries, against a national insurance company, wherein her client prevailed at trial with a substantial jury verdict and recovered all requested costs. Ms. Tang also first chaired a court trial in a breach of contract action, again successfully prevailing at trial.
Ms. Tang has also served as litigation counsel for a Bay Area public entity, advising it as to litigation issues as well as representing the public entity in numerous lawsuits, with successful results. Ms. Tang was part of the team who successfully defended the local public entity in a large personal injury claim arising from an accident on federal property, wherein the federal government denied liability and refused to indemnify the local entity. Ms. Tang and the litigation team researched the complex legal issues involved, and were ultimately successful negotiating with the federal government, who ultimately agreed to both indemnify the local entity as well as pay the full costs of its defense.
In addition to her civil litigation experience, Ms. Tang also has appellate experience. She prepared an appellate brief in the 2nd Appellate District involving an Anti-SLAPP issue, which resulted in a full reversal of the trial court's ruling.
Ms. Tang has also advised the firm's corporate clients as to complex employment law issues, involving the Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disability Act, as well as wage and hour issues. She has also prepared, drafted, and reviewed complex transactional agreements, including Non-Disclosure Agreements, Licensing Agreements, and Triple Net Leases.
